Best AI Character Creators 2026: 7 Tools Compared

An honest comparison of seven AI tools that make characters, with prices and commercial-use terms copied from each site on October 19, 2026.

Last verified and who wrote this

Last verified: October 19, 2026. We make one of the tools below, CharaGacha, and we say so wherever it comes up. Prices and limits are what each site's own page showed on that day. Plans change often, so check the linked page before you pay.

Most "best AI OC generator" lists are written by the companies that sell the tools, and they rank themselves first. We would rather give you the facts you can check and tell you where the other tools beat ours.

Quick answer

  • You want a character with art, name, personality and backstory from one prompt: CharaGacha does all four in one go. We did not confirm how much of a written profile the other tools produce, so check each one's own page.
  • You mainly want images, with more models and styles: OCMaker AI, LlamaGen and Leonardo.Ai are image-first platforms with much larger plan menus.
  • You want a VTuber design and know you will commission a rigger: Renoise states plainly that it makes a 2D design, not a rigged model, and so does CharaGacha.
  • You want something free and do not mind rough edges: Perchance is widely used for that, but we could not load its own page, so we cannot give you its limits.
  • You want a character you can talk to: that is a different kind of tool (Character.AI is the usual name). We did not review chat tools here.

How we checked

We opened each tool's pricing page in a normal browser on October 19, 2026 and copied the plan names, prices, credit amounts and the lines about commercial use and watermarks exactly as shown. We did not buy a plan, we did not run each generator, and we did not compare image quality, so this article makes no claim about whose art looks best. Where a page did not show something, we wrote "not read" instead of guessing.

Two limits to keep in mind. A pricing page can list "commercial use" while the terms of service add conditions. And a credit is not a standard unit: one site's credit buys an image, another's buys a few seconds of video.

CharaGacha (ours)

What it makes. One generation gives you a character portrait plus a name, personality, goal, flaw, quirks and a short backstory, saved to My Characters. A separate text-only generator writes just the profile for 1 credit. From a saved character you can go on to a VTuber avatar, PNGTuber frames, Q-version art or a set of Twitch and Discord emotes.

Our numbers. A standard portrait costs 2 credits and an HD one costs 6. Plans are Starter at $7.99 a month for 300 credits and Pro at $19.99 a month for 1,000 credits, with yearly prices of $79 and $199. Credit packs cost $4.99 for 120 credits, $9.99 for 300 and $24.99 for 900, and pack credits do not expire. Visitors get one free standard creation a day without signing up, and a new account gets 10 credits, which is five standard characters.

Where it is a good fit. You want the picture and the written profile together, you only make original characters, and you would rather buy a small pack than subscribe.

Where others win. We do not make video or animation, we do not build rigged VTuber models, and we offer fewer art models than the larger platforms. Our pricing page says all purchases are final and non-refundable; OCMaker AI and Renoise both publish a seven-day refund window for unused purchases. We are new, so there are no independent reviews of us yet, and a design can come out similar for two users, which our terms say plainly.

OCMaker AI

What it is. A broad anime platform: its own navigation lists a character creator, an AI VTuber maker, pose and dance tools, storyboards and a long list of image and video models. It also has pages for existing franchises, such as Naruto and Pokémon OC makers. CharaGacha only makes original characters and does not recreate existing ones.

What we read. Basic is $8 a month billed annually ($96) with 150 credits, up to 75 images or 37 videos a month. Standard is $20 a month billed annually ($240) with 400 credits. Pro is $72 a month billed annually ($864) with 1,500 credits. Every paid plan lists "No Watermarks", "Full Commercial Use" and "Private Creation". Its pricing FAQ says an unused purchase can be refunded within 7 days.

Not read: the monthly (not annual) price, the free plan, and whether it writes a character profile.

Where it wins. Many more models, video tools, and a published refund window.

LlamaGen

What it is. An anime and comic platform. Its character sheet tool is described as a free generator of three-view anime sheets, front, side and back, from text or images.

What we read. Paid plans run from $14 a month billed annually ($172.80 a year, 15,000 credits a month) up to $120 a month billed annually for 270,000 credits. The pricing page also lists credit packages from $9.99. A free plan exists; its credit amount was not read. The page says subscribers may use their images in just about any way, with a Pro or Unlimited plan required for companies above a stated revenue level.

Where it wins. The three-view reference sheet, comic and multi-panel tools, and a large credit allowance.

Renoise

What it is. An AI VTuber maker: full-body, half-body or a three-view sheet from a description. Its page says the result is a 2D illustration, not a rigged model, and its FAQ says it does not write a persona.

What we read. Plans are $20 a month ($16 for the first billing period), $60 ($42 for the first period) and $200 a month. The plans list "Commercial Use" and watermark-free exports. A first subscription can be refunded within 7 days if no credits or paid benefits have been used. We saw an offer of free credits for following its account; the credit amounts per plan were not read.

Where it wins. It tells you exactly what the output is and is not, shows labeled examples, and its three-view sheet suits a Live2D artist. We write the profile text; Renoise does not.

Elser AI

What it is. An anime generator and OC maker with video, storyboard and motion tools, and a "free to start" tier.

What we read. The pricing page lists a Free plan and paid plans at $9, $22.90, $32.90 and $79.90 a month, and shows "Commercial Use" in the plan table. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, and extra credit packs are sold separately.

Not read: which paid plans include commercial use, and what each plan's credits buy.

Where it wins. If you want to turn a character into video or a storyboard, it does that and we do not.

Leonardo.Ai

What it is. A general AI image generator, not a character-profile tool.

What we read. The pricing page shows a free plan at $0 and paid plans at $12, $30 and $60 a month, with team plans above that. The token amounts and the commercial-use terms did not come through when we read the page, so we do not state them.

Where it wins. Team plans advertise training your own AI models, and it is built around images in general rather than characters.

Perchance

What it is. A community-run free generator site with an AI character generator.

What we read. Nothing from its own page: it loaded blank when we read it, so we cannot report its limits, terms or output. Other reviewers describe it as free with no sign-up. Treat that as unverified until you open it yourself.

Price per character, with a warning

Our paid credits work out to about $0.05 to $0.08 per standard character (2 credits each), and a character includes the written profile. OCMaker AI's Basic plan lists up to 75 images for $8 a month on annual billing, which is about 11 cents per image at best. Do not read that as "cheaper" or "dearer": an image, a character, a video second and a panel are different units, and the sizes differ.

Free use and commercial rights

  • CharaGacha: one free standard creation a day without an account, plus 10 credits for a new account. Our Terms of Service allow personal and commercial use of what you create, and the pricing page lists commercial use on every plan.
  • OCMaker AI: "Full Commercial Use" is listed on every paid plan. Free-plan terms not read.
  • LlamaGen: a free plan exists. Commercial use follows its subscriber rule above.
  • Renoise: commercial use and watermark-free exports are listed on the paid plans.
  • Elser AI: a Free plan exists; the commercial-use line is in the plan table, and which plans it covers was not read.
  • Leonardo.Ai: free plan at $0; commercial terms not read.
  • Perchance: not read.

Before you publish or sell anything, read the tool's terms. Also note that AI-generated art may not be protected by copyright in every country, and two users can get similar results from similar prompts.

Best for

  • One portrait with a full written profile: CharaGacha.
  • A big model menu and video: OCMaker AI or Elser AI (we have not compared their output).
  • Three-view anime sheets and comics: LlamaGen.
  • A VTuber design for a rigger: Renoise, or CharaGacha if you also want the profile and matching emotes.
  • General image work beyond characters: Leonardo.Ai.
  • Zero cost, rough edges accepted: Perchance (unverified).

What we will test next

This version compares what each site publishes. A later version will run the same character description through each tool and show the results side by side, including the bad ones. Until then, treat any "best art quality" claim, from us or anyone else, as unproven.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI character creator in 2026?

It depends on what you need. If you want art plus a name, personality and backstory from one prompt, CharaGacha is built for that. If you want video or a huge model menu, OCMaker AI or Elser AI do more. If you want a rigged VTuber model, none of the tools here make one. We are one of the seven, so check the table and decide for yourself.

Is there a free AI OC maker?

Several have a free tier. CharaGacha gives one free standard creation a day without signing up and 10 credits to new accounts. Elser AI, LlamaGen and Leonardo.Ai list free plans; Perchance is described as free. Free limits change, so read the site first.

Can I use AI-made characters commercially?

Our Terms of Service allow personal and commercial use of what you create with CharaGacha, and the other paid tools above list commercial use on their plans. Read each site's terms before you sell merchandise, publish a book or put the character on a channel.

Do AI character creators write the backstory too?

Some do and some only draw. CharaGacha writes the name, personality and backstory with the art. Renoise says it does not write a persona. Check what the tool's own page promises.

Can the same character look the same in every image?

It is the hardest part of this category. On CharaGacha you save a character and generate from the saved profile, and the more details you keep fixed, the closer the results. We do not promise identical results, and we have not tested the other tools on this.

Can I make a VTuber with these tools?

You can design the look. None of the tools here makes a rigged, face-tracked model. See the VTuber Maker for the avatar and Emote Maker for emotes.

Can I make a character from an existing anime or game?

Not on CharaGacha, which is for original characters only. Some other sites offer franchise OC pages, so check their terms.

How often is this page updated?

We re-check prices and terms each quarter and change the date at the top. If you spot something out of date, contact us.
