OC Generator: Random Original Character Ideas

Stuck on a new character? Roll a complete original character profile in seconds, then keep it, tweak it or roll again.

What the OC generator creates

Each result is a ready-to-use character sheet:

  • Name that fits the genre and setting
  • Age, role and background: who they are and where they come from
  • Appearance: hair, eyes, build, clothing and one signature detail
  • Personality: three core traits, a strength and a flaw
  • Goal and fear: what drives the character and what holds them back
  • Backstory: a short paragraph with a hook you can build a story on
  • Quirks: small habits and likes that make the character feel real

How to use it

  1. Pick a genre, or leave it random. Fantasy, sci-fi, modern, school life, post-apocalyptic, mystery, cozy slice-of-life and more.
  2. Add optional details. Lock any field you already know, such as a name, gender, age range or role (hero, villain, mentor, sidekick), and the OC creator fills in the rest.
  3. Generate and refine. Roll again for a completely new character, or regenerate a single field you don't like.
  4. Bring it to life. Send the profile to the Character Creator to draw your OC with the same details.

Ideas for using random OCs

  • Writing prompts. Generate three characters and put them in the same room. What goes wrong?
  • Art challenges. Draw a random OC every day for a week to practice designs you would never think of on your own.
  • Roleplay and tabletop games. Create NPCs on the spot when players wander somewhere you didn't plan.
  • Worldbuilding. Fill a town, a guild or a school class with people who each have a goal and a secret.
  • Breaking writer's block. Lock the parts of a character you already like and let the generator suggest the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an OC generator?

An OC generator creates an original character for you: a name, appearance, personality and backstory. It is a quick way to find new character ideas for stories, art, roleplay and games.

Is the OC generator free?

You can try it free with the 10 credits every new account receives. Text-only characters use fewer credits than characters with artwork.

Can I choose some details myself?

Yes. Lock any field you already know, such as a name, gender, age or genre, and the generator builds the rest of the character around it.

Can I turn my generated OC into a picture?

Yes. Click "Draw this character" to open the profile in the Character Creator, which draws a portrait using the same details.

Are the characters really original?

Every character is generated from scratch and is not copied from an existing book, game or show. Names can occasionally match a real person or another character by coincidence, so do a quick search before you publish a story with one.

Who owns the characters I generate?

Characters you generate are yours to use. See our Terms of Service for details.
