How to create your own fantasy names
1. Pick a sound palette for each culture
Decide which sounds belong to each people or region. For example:
- Elves: soft consonants (l, r, th, s), lots of vowels, endings like -iel, -wen, -ion
- Dwarves: hard consonants (k, g, d, r), short syllables, endings like -in, -ik, -a
- Orcs: heavy sounds (gr, zh, kr), one or two syllables
- Nobles: names that sound like old real-world names, with small changes
When every name from one culture shares a sound palette, readers can tell where characters come from just by hearing their names.
2. Combine syllables
Make a list of syllables that fit your palette and mix them: Cae + lith = Caelith, Mor + gath = Morgath, Thae + lion = Thaelion.
3. Change one letter of a real word
Take a real word related to the character and alter it: raven becomes Ravik, ember becomes Embrin, thorn becomes Thorne.
4. Add titles and epithets
Fantasy characters often have earned names: "Ysolde the Pale," "Durgan Ironhand," "Kestrel of the Northern Watch." Titles tell a story in a few words.
5. Watch out for common pitfalls
- Too many apostrophes. One here and there adds flavor; three in a name is hard to read.
- Unpronounceable spellings. If readers can't guess how to say it, they'll stumble every time.
- Famous names. Search your favorite names to make sure they don't belong to well-known characters.
- Similar names in one cast. Kael, Kaela and Kaelith in the same party is confusing.

FAQ
How do you make a fantasy name sound good?
Use a consistent set of sounds for each culture, keep names easy to pronounce, and make sure they fit the character's role and personality.
Can I use these fantasy names in my book or game?
Yes. Names can't be owned, so you can use any of these in your stories, tabletop campaigns and games.
What are some good elf names?
Try Caelith, Elarion, Faelwen, Lithiel, Naerys or Thaelion. Elf names usually use soft sounds and flowing endings.
What makes a good villain name?
Hard consonants, dark imagery and a memorable rhythm. Names like Morthane, Vexira and Draegor sound threatening without being over the top.
