A good backstory explains why your character is the way they are: why they want what they want, why they're afraid, and why they make the choices they make. It doesn't need to be long or tragic. It just needs to matter.

A simple formula for writing a backstory
Turn any idea above into a backstory that matters with these four parts:
- Before: what was life like? (Two or three sentences.)
- The event: what happened that changed things?
- The wound: what belief did the character form because of it? ("I can't trust anyone." "I have to be perfect." "It was my fault.")
- Now: how does that belief shape what they want and fear today?
Example: Before: Mira grew up in a lively bakery run by her grandmother. Event: The bakery burned down while Mira was supposed to be watching the ovens. Wound: She believes she can't be trusted with anything important. Now: She wants to rebuild the bakery but turns down every chance to lead.
That's enough to drive a whole story.
Backstory tips
- Keep it short at first. Three to five sentences is plenty. Add details as you need them.
- Don't default to tragedy. A quiet, specific history is often more believable than a dramatic one.
- Connect it to the present. If the backstory doesn't affect who the character is now, it's trivia.
- Leave mysteries. It's okay if parts of the past are unknown, even to the character.
- Reveal it slowly. In stories, share backstory in small pieces when it matters, not all at once.

FAQ
How long should a character backstory be?
Start with three to five sentences that cover where they came from, what changed them and how it affects them now. Expand only when your story needs more.
Does every OC need a tragic backstory?
No. Tragic backstories are common, which makes them predictable. Everyday histories, such as a strict upbringing, a missed opportunity or a move to a new city, can be just as powerful.
How do I write a backstory for a roleplay character?
Give them a clear reason to be part of the adventure, a goal, and one secret or unresolved issue the game master can use. Leave room for the story to fill in the rest.
What is the difference between backstory and personality?
Backstory is what happened to the character. Personality is who they became because of it. Good backstories explain personality traits.
